Touch Diamond Feature of the Day: FM Radio

Posted by Nishanth Samala on August 8th, 2008

Starting from today and continuing on into next week, I’ll be giving you some information about one feature a day of the Touch Diamond that you know little about or you probably want to find out more about that particular feature.

Today, I’ll be starting with the FM Radio (not to be random or anything…:D). Let’s start out by giving a physical description. The FM Radio antenna isn’t actually in the Touch Diamond, it’s in the headphones. Unfortunately, this means that you must plug in your headphones into your Diamond to listen to the radio. Never fear, by touching the headphone icon on the FM Radio program shown below, you can toggle between using the device speakers and the headphones, but you still will have the headphones dangling out of the ExtUSB port.

Once you open the actual software, you find a nice very clean interface that goes with the rest of TouchFLO 3D. At the top, the text toggles between radio frequency and the radio station name, giving you the name of the song playing below. In the center, you have nav buttons to search for other networks above or below the current frequency automatically or manually. You can also choose for mono/stereo audio, speaker/headphone output and mute/unmute volume here. At the bottom, there are six slots available for presets.

When you first plugin the headphones, the Diamond will automatically scan the area for signals and designate the six presets to the first clear channels it can find. The sound quality is very loud and crisp, with the two headphones giving you the sensation of a miniature home theater system in your ears.

It’s a pretty amazing experience, though it’s even better with the music player in TouchFLO 3D. Look for that feature next time.

I like your idea to feature a feature of the day.
The Diamond is full of features to feature. Well,
I am very excited about buying a Diamond by HTC.
Do you think Sprint’s variant of the Diamond is equal
to the US version? I bought the LG VU from AT & T in
early May 08. Right after that purchase, maybe the next day- I learned about the Diamond and can’t wait to get one. It took all of my will power not to buy
the Euro version. I could wait til Sept 2 and get the
US GSM Diamond from Mobile City Online.com for $699 or sign up with Sprint on Sept 2 and pay $149+? plus their activation fee. I would end up paying AT & T $155 if
I break their contract. But is Sprint’s coverage any
good? I live in Kennett Square PA- 45Min south of Philly …Don’t know what to do!!!

Sprint’s variant will probably have the features of original Touch Diamond. as to what you should do about your carrier, I don’t think I would be the right person to answer that.

Thanks for your input. I am already looking forward to
HTC’s next smart phone. Maybe one with Nvidia graphics-
check out their website. And a phone with 5 megapixel
camera, 3+ inch screen, more onboard memory too.

I had a Nokia phone that used the headphones as an antenna like this in the past. A bit odd, but as I usually listen to radio or music with headphones on anyway with a protable device, no problem… until you lose your headphones.

Nishanth - do you kow if there are any other FM Radio programs that might work on the Diamond? I have a Canadian/Telus branded model, and they chose not to include the FM Radio program. I can’t imagine that they would disable it in the hardware, so I am wondering if something else might work. Thx. Mike G

Most other radio programs are for internet radio. I can get you the original app from the official update this weekend. Look for it on the forums.

Hi Nishanth - that would be great! I assume you mean the forums here at AllTouchSite? Thanks. Mike G

I’ll try for this weekend. And yeah, look around in the AlltTouchSite forums a little bit later this week.

Hi Nishanth - I see the AllTouchSite forums have disappeared :-( Any chance of still getting the FM Radio app? Thanks. Mike G

I don’t see a FM radio app on my US 3G touch diamond.
    Where do I get it?
